How To Measure Custom Curtains Guide

At Blinds Downunder we have put together a written guide on how to measure different custom curtain configurations. We recommend curtains only be installed as Face Fit or Ceiling/Top Mount. For fabric selections, head to our samples page and use our Curtain Fabrics Page to view fabric range.

Measuring Instructions

Curtain widths start from 300mm -6000mm

Curtain Tracks will be joined at 3950mm

Drops start from 350mm - 4600mm

Note:

If your ceiling is not level or floors are not level, we recommend to choose a Face Fit Curtain.

Face Fit Curtains can generally provided better fixings than ceilings. Refer to our installation guide for further details.

If ordering a pelmet you will require depths of 100mm (IBM) for single curtain or 200mm (IBM) for double curtains, single roller/single curtain combination will require 180mm (IBM). Reference IBM = inside pelmet measurement.

For drops larger than the fabric widths, fabric will be railroaded (turned on side)

Items you will need

1)Steel Tape measure (All measurements to be documented in millimetres)

2)Print Measurement form or populate Measurement form online

3)Pen and Paper

 Important notes;

1) Always document the room your curtain will be installed. You may wish to sketch a plan of curtain locations as reference. Hang onto both your Measurement form/sketch and file for future reference.

2)Always measure every window, wall or ceiling individually, check measurements in a minimum of three different locations for the drop. Windows and walls can sometimes be out of square. Refer to measurement image and specific measurement documents: Face Fit and Ceiling/Top Mount.

Special Note; Depending on your desired look, curtains can be ordered to go past architraves, as a guide go past architraves by 1/3 extra of the actual curtain width. This option is not available for wall to wall curtains. Each situation is different, so it is important you work out what is best for your application.By ordering curtains wider and higher than your architraves, you can limit the light entering your room. Wall too wall and ceiling to floor, can provide a great option for light control.

Curtain fabrics can tend to settle (drop) over time, keep this in mind when ordering  Just off floor or Just touching floor, for operation purposes. With Face Fit measurement hard to cornice line or ceiling, you may wish to deduct an additional 10mm, to allow for future adjustment. It is important to input your measurements for your drop the exact size you require your finished height from the finished. Our configurator will make the appropriate deduction based on Just off the floor and Just touching the floor and exactly as described. It is always recommended if you are finding it difficult to differentiate between one millimetre, you write down the lesser measurement.

Puddled curtains are longer, so it is important to keep your drop as is. Your widths and drops are a personal preference. It is always recommended if you are finding it difficult to differentiate between one millimetre, you write down the larger measurement, when ordering Puddled curtains. One Custom Split Curtain (Two Curtains)

Reference how to measure width in document Face Fit and Ceiling / Top Mount curtains measurement guides above. Enter your chosen overall curtain width measurement in our configurator. Refer to image below for One Split Curtain; Example 5000mm overall width, if measurement (a) is 1000mm wide, then we will make measurement (b) 4000mm wide, to provide a total overall measurement of 5000mm wide. Always provide measurement from the left hand side.

Two Custom Split Curtain (Three Curtains)

Reference how to measure width in document Face Fit and Ceiling / Top Mount curtains measurement guides above. Enter your overall curtain width measurement in our configurator. Refer to image below for Two Split Curtain; Example 5000mm overall width, if measurement (a) is 1000mm wide, then you enter measurement (b) as 2000mm wide, we would provide (C) measurement of 3000mm wide, to provide a total overall measurement of 5000mm wide. That means measurement (b) would be 1000mm wide. Always provide measurement from the left hand side.

3)Always measure the width measurement and then the drop measurement in that order. Make sure you write measurements to the exact millimetre.

4) Always document the side you wish your curtain to stack (close to).Motorised curtains that are single stack will have motor on stack side end.

5) Always look for any obstructions ie; door/window hardware, which may interfere with your curtains functionality. You may need to increase the bracket size from our standard 75mm size to 100mm bracket. 150mm Brackets are the best option to clear single roller blinds behind curtain.180mm brackets will need to be chosen for double curtains.

6) Never take measurement directly from your house plans or window schedules as this will most likely not be accurate.

7) Always Triple check your measurements and curtain details you have documented.

8)Your width measurement is variable based on your desired choice of finish. For wall to wall we recommend deducting 20mm of your measurement, to allow the track to easily fit in your desired space. For architrave to architrave of a window or door, we recommend adding 1/3 to your width to avoid obstructing your window or door. It is important to input your measurements for your drop the exact size you require your finished height from finished floor. Our configurator will make the appropriate deduction based on Just off the floor, Just touching the floor and additional drop for Puddled curtains. Your widths and drops are personal preference. It is always recommended For corner windows, contact us directly to discuss options.

10) If you are measuring with someone else, make sure everyone is reading the tape measure the same way, before you start measuring the entire house lot of curtains. Make sure to read all measurements out aloud and confirm measurements by repeating your assistant’s measurement, especially before writing the finalised measurements on your measurement form.

11) Once you have completed the Measurement Form, transfer these details to  Curtain Selection page. Triple check the information you are entering relates to your Measurement Form, as you go. Always check your information is correct prior to proceeding with purchase.

Custom Corner Curtains ( Custom Order on request )

Reference how to measure width in document Face Fit and Ceiling / Top Mount curtains measurement guides above. Write down your overall curtain width. Reference image below for custom order corner curtains.  Always provide measurements from the left hand side and work your way around. Example of measurement; (a) 2000mm wide, (b) 5000mm wide, (c) 2000mm wide. Overall input would be 9000mm overall. Our factory can then make the appropriate deductions for manufacture. It is important to add additional stack, if you are looking to clear a door or window as mentioned in Face Fit and Ceiling / Top Mount curtains measurement guides above. Example measurement (a) may required additional width and measurement (c) may require additional width.Measurement (b) would be a fixed measurement in this scenario.

For Butting Custom Curtains (75mm Single Brackets only) deduct 120mm from one track only. Choose which curtain you wish to but fully into corner. (Seperate Tracks)
